WELCOME:The month of October is filled with activity within our sangha and in Pittsburgh. The highlight of which is a workshop on anger as a spiritual practice lead by our head priest, Rev. Kyoki Roberts. The two-hour sessions will be on Thursday nights (10/14, 10/21 and 10/28) at the First Unitarian Church of Pittsburgh in Shadyside starting at 6:30pm. See the article below for more information. We will also be holding our quarterly board meeting this month and invite everyone to attend. Kyoki and Rev. Jisen Coghlan will be off to Great Vow Monastery outside of Portland, Oregon later this month for the Soto Zen Buddhist Association meeting. Kyoki has been serving as the vice-president of this national organization and head of its ethics committee. We also send our congratulations to Drs.Chiara Ghetti and Jerry Lowder on the birth of a baby boy on September 23rd. Our very own Shinki Molly Forrest represented the Zen Center of Pittsburgh at an International Day of Peace ceremony on Mt. Washington last month. Here are some photos from the event. |

SPIRITUAL APPROACH TO ANGER
"Don't be so angry" we tell ourselves and are told by others. But what if anger has something to tell us and is actually an important part of the spiritual path? If this is true, then trying not to be angry might actually be the problem! In this three-session workshop participants will work with anger as a spiritual practice within ourselves, within our family, and within our communities.
Rev. Kyoki Roberts, Head Priest of the Zen Center of Pittsburgh will use her training in Buddhist psychology, Zen meditation, and mediation to encourage the investigation of one of the most troublesome spiritual dilemmas.
October 14, 6:30-8:30pm In our first class we will look at the nature of anger as it arises in ourselves. We will use small groups, worksheets, discussion and meditation to learn what is happening when rage takes over our hearts and minds.
October 21, 6:30-8:30pm In the second class we look at anger in our primary relationships of family, close friends, and work. What are we trying to achieve when we snap at the person we love most in the world but keep silent and stew when a co-worker acts badly? Are there tools we can put in our pocket that allow us to better understand this incredibly difficult person in front of us?
October 28, 6:30-8:30pm In our last class we look at anger and our communities. What is the connection between our personal anger and the use of violence in our world against women, children, other countries? What can we do to bring about a more peaceful world?
Location: First Unitarian Church 605 Morewood Avenue in Shadyside.
